The essential questions to ask when starting a new L&D project
Because, how can you provide the right solution if you don't know what the actual need is?
Embarking on a new L&D project? The key to success lies in asking the right questions from the start! Understanding the "why," "what," "who," "where," "when," and "how" can transform your project from good to exceptional. These questions help uncover crucial information, identify potential obstacles, and align your goals with broader organizational objectives. Don't just dive in—equip yourself with the insights to craft impactful, tailored learning experiences. Discover the essential questions I have incorporated over my 16-year journey in L&D and what the essential information you aim to gain from these:
1️⃣ Why
Delve into the reasons behind needing the learning resource. Identify potential obstacles like knowledge gaps or lack of motivation that may hinder learners' critical actions. Scrutinize whether learning is genuinely the solution required for the identified challenges.
2️⃣ What
Clearly articulate the desired end outcome and what success looks like. Evaluate existing content and draw from past successful learning experiences. Align the training with specific, measurable goals, ensuring that they align seamlessly with the organization's broader objectives.
3️⃣ Who
Understand your audience inside out and identify the Subject Matter Experts involved. Recognize any project-specific requirements and key stakeholders crucial for successful collaboration. This comprehensive understanding of your audience and collaborators is paramount to crafting a tailored learning experience.
4️⃣ Where
Consider your learners' geographical location and assess whether translations and localization are necessary. Ensure access is viable through responsive learning tools for desktop and mobile devices. Pinpoint where learners will access their materials and establish the hosting platform, be it a dedicated learning platform, marketing campaign, or even a Slack channel.
5️⃣ When
Establish project deadlines and understand the reasons behind them. Define when learners will actively engage in the learning experience and the expected duration. This timeline comprehension aids in gauging the project's scope effectively and ensures a seamless learning experience.
6️⃣ How
Develop a robust marketing strategy to not only inform learners about the course but also underline the benefits it offers them. Gauge the course's effectiveness by measuring improvements in learner performance and its impact on business goals. Utilize the V Model to outline metrics for measurement and develop an effective analysis plan for Return on Investment (ROI).
That's a fair list of essential questions but not every possibility that could be asked, so feel free to drop any that work well for you in the comments section below.
